Information on State Money available this year.

It is a $2 million program just for islands.
Grants will range from $250,000 to $400,000.
There will be a 10 percent local match in cash and/or in kind.
Housing can be new construction or major rehab of existing housing. The resulting houses must be “green” and energy efficient.
Housing can be rental or home-ownership.
The State recognizes that living on an island is more expensive than the mainland. Eligible families can have incomes as high as $75,500 for a family of four.
Since the money is intended as a stimulus to the economy as well as an affordable housing program, the State is looking for projects that will shovel-ready this summer, with applications being submitted this spring.

Meeting of the CICA Housing Committee
Tuesday March 16, 2010 at 7:15 at the Parish House

On Tuesday March 9 the CICA Board held a public meeting about the possibility of substantial State funding this spring for affordable housing projects on islands. The nature of the program was described and there was a discussion about possible Chebeague projects including the work that the Housing Committee is already doing on new construction of affordable housing on the Curit property, as well as the possibility of purchase and rehabilitation of existing housing on the market or in foreclosure. The Board voted to hold a public meeting on affordable housing in the next month to evaluate whether Chebeague should apply for State funding and for what kind of project.

If you want to have a say in whether Chebeague goes forward with an affordable housing proposal this spring, come to the Housing Committee meetings and the public meeting when it is scheduled.
