NATIONAL FLOOD INSURANCE PROGRAM (NFIP) APPROVED FOR TOWN

Recently, we received notice from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that the Town of Chebeague Island has joined 20,000 other communities nationwide that are allowed to purchase federally backed flood insurance. This availability follows the good planning by the Transition Committee and its Land Use Subcommittee, and in particular Leila Bisharat who worked to ensure that the new Town adopted and would enforce ordinances to reduce flood losses back on July 1, 2007 at Town Meeting. As a result the Town is now officially a participant in the NFIP effective on 12-31-07. This means residents of the Town who desire will be able to purchase flood insurance up to the regular limits under the ³Regular Phase² of the NFIP program. However, there will be a 30 day waiting period before the flood insurance you purchase goes into effect. For single – family dwellings, the building coverage limit is $250,000 and the contents coverage is $100,000. In addition, renters can also protect their belongings by purchasing contents coverage. For commercial properties, the building and contents coverage limits are both $500,000. Lenders must require borrowers whose properties are located in a designated flood hazard area to purchase flood insurance as a condition of receiving a federally backed mortgage loan in accordance with the Federal Disaster Protection Act of 1973.

If you need additional assistance or information about how to enroll, we strongly recommend you speak with your personal insurance broker, firm or representative. If you have questions about the particulars of the NFIP program, we recommend you contact the NFIP State Coordinator, Lou Sidell. He can be reached at 287-8063 or by email at lou.sidell@maine.gov
