FOREST FIRE PREVENTION HOUSE SURVEY: Recently, our Island Institute Fellow, Thea Youngs, received training from the State of Maine Forest Service. Thea participated in the Wildland Interface Program which is designed to train staff on how to reduce risks to homes from the threat of a wildfire. We believe this is an important public safety matter given that the island is heavily forested. Now we would like to put her training to good use on behalf of the citizens. During November we would like our Fire Chief, Tom Calder and Thea to inspect a random sample of 50 properties for risk or threat of wildfire damage. In addition, again following the Maine Forest Service guidelines, it is recommended we sample 25 areas of undeveloped land for a potential fire hazard.

Before we proceed any further we will be holding an Informational Meeting on Tuesday, November 13 at 7:00 P.M. at the firehouse to explain in further detail what this survey will entail. At that time both our Fire Chief and Island Fellow will also be available to answer any questions or respond to any public comments.
