Megan Thorn for MSAD 51 School Board

Vote June 11

I believe that educating children is the most important undertaking of a community. I am proud to live

in a community that has consistently supported quality education and want to work to continue

that tradition.

Communication and Collaboration for our Schools and our Community

As your school board member, I pledge to improve communication and collaboration between our schools and our community as we work together to:

Improve curriculum to help all children learn at a high level

Improve the partnership between parents and schools

Improve communication and participation between our schools and community

Seek ways to reflect the character of our community in our children’s school experience

Explore ways to control the rate of growth and seek new sources of revenue apart from residential

property taxes

I am very well informed about the operations of our schools having been an active school volunteer for the past 8 years as a classroom volunteer and a member on:

the Time Task Force

the Committee to Support the Middle School Referendum

the Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools committee

several teacher and administrator hiring committees.

I have 20 years’ professional experience in community relations and communications for non-profit educational and arts organizations. One of my strengths is an ability to listen to conflicting ideas, identify common themes, and find workable, cost-effective solutions.

My previous community leadership experience includes:

Community Cable Consortium, founding member, president (1990-1992), personnel and communications committees

Friends of the Prince Memorial Library, newsletter and events committees

Cumberland Town Forest, trail project

Maine Public Relations Council, executive committee

Figures of Speech Theatre, communications and education committees

Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance, personnel (chair) and communications committees

I have been a Cumberland resident for 11 years with my husband, Ned Smith. We have a daughter in the 7th grade and a son in 4th grade in the Cumberland/North Yarmouth school system.

Please feel free to call me with any questions, ideas, and concerns. 829-4689
