Ann P. Knight

Mrs. Knight was born in New York City, and was raised in Greenwich, Connecticut where she attended Greenwich Academy. She graduated from Vassar College at the age of 19 with a degree in mathematics. On November 9, 1946 she married Richard N. Knight Jr. and moved to Philadelphia, Pa. They had 3 children, Jeanne Park (Wentling), Richard N. III, and John Philbrick.

A resident of Gladwyne for over 60 years, Mrs. Knight was involved with, and supported several local organizations. The Gladwyne Library, Gladwyne Fire Company, and St. Christopher's Church. She was on the Board of Directors of the Visiting Nurse Association of Philadelphia for over 15 years, as well as on the Advisory Board of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She was a board member of the Vassar Designer Showhouse, and was one of the original Volunteers for Wheels for Welfare. She was presented with an award from the Mayor of Philadelphia for her volunteerism.

Mrs. Knight also excelled in competitive pursuits. She was an accomplished bridge and backgammon player. She was excellent tennis player, winning the Ladies Doubles championship at the Merion Cricket Club in 1965. After bursitis made it difficult to serve, she took up golf, and ended up playing on the Ladies Team at Gulf Mills Golf Club, and winning the Ladies Championship at the Great Chebeague Golf Club on the Chebeague Island, Maine.

Chebeague was her "summer sanctuary" where her home "Tall Beeches" was the site of 60 years of picnics, lobster bakes, and family gatherings. She was involved with several organizations on the island. The Island Commons, the Library, the Methodist Church, The Chebeague Historical Society, Cumberland Island Trust, and the Island Institute. She is survived by all three children, six grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations for the Chebeague Island Commons, or the Visiting Nurse Association of Greater Philadelphia. A memorial service will be held at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Gladwyn on October 21, 2011 at 2:00 PM.

A Memorial Service on Chebeague will be July 21st at 3pm with a gathering at the golf club after.
