Charles Kuntz

CHEBEAGUE ISLAND—Charles Kuntz, 92 of Chebeague Island, passed away peacefully October 2, 2011 at Island Commons.  Charlie was born in Carney’s Point, NJ, one of eleven children of James J. and Charlotte B. (Cushing) Kuntz.  He later lived in Portland, Diamond Island, and Long Island, ME where his father was a military tailor.  He worked for Casco Bay Lines on steamboats and during WWII worked on the Aucocisco transferring men and supplies to the Casco Bay Islands as well as setting training targets for the military as part of the Harbor Defense system.  He was a mate on the Maquoit and eventually captain of the Sabino.  He married Evelyn Doughty in 1947 and moved to Chebeague Island where he was caretaker and ran private boats for the Ballard estate and several other long-time summer residents.  He loved hunting, fishing, and the challenge of repairing anything mechanical.  He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn; and son, Edward Weagle.  He is survived by a sister, Sarah Teague; son, Charles M. Kuntz and his wife Kathleen; daughter, Cis Tonks and her husband, Rick; eight grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and many close nieces and nephews. 

The family wishes to acknowledge Ginnie Ballard, the staff of Island Commons, and Hospice of Southern Maine for their warm, loving care.

There will be a service at the Chebeague Methodist Church, Saturday, October 8, 2011 at 1:00 PM.
