KATHARINE SWENARTON CAPPS

Katharine Rose Swenarton Capps, 89, died peacefully at the Island Commons on Chebeague Island on September 22, 2005.

She was born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 10, 1916, daughter of Harold Augustus and Rose Greer Swenarton. She attended school in Evanston, Illinois, completed high school in Newton, Massachusetts, and graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1937.

Kathy was a lifelong summer resident of Chebeague Island, where she first met her husband Stephen Reid Capps at the age of 7. They were married on June 21, 1941, and moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where she was a homemaker and active community volunteer, holding offices in the American Red Cross, the American Association of University Women, and Duodecimo, a literary club. She was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Ft. Wayne and a longstanding member of PEO, both there and in Maine.

She returned to Maine with her husband as year-round residents in 1982, living first in Portland, where she continued her volunteer work. They moved to the Highlands in Topsham in 1999 and to the Island Commons on Chebeague in August, 2003.

Kathy is survived be her two daughters, Sarah Tubbesing of Freeport and her husband, Carl and Rosemary Merchant of Oakland, California and her husband, John; one son, Stephen Reid Capps IV of Mount Airy, Maryland and his wife, Linnea, their two daughters, Katharine and Jennifer, and a great-grandson, Michael.

A memorial service will be scheduled on Chebeague Island next summer.
