S. Hayes MacArthur Jr.

S. Hayes MacArthur Jr. 71, passed away Saturday, February 20, 2021. Hayes was born to the late parents S. Hayes MacArthur Sr. (Mac) and Phyllis MacArthur.

He was born in Plainfield and grew up in Bridgewater, before moving to Branchburg in 1970, where he spent the remainder of his life. Hayes graduated from Rider University in 1972 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Business. He was proud to be a member of the fraternity Phi Kappa Psi.

In 1955, Mac started the family business; MacArthur Appliances in Somerville. Hayes Jr. became co-owner of the business in 1974. He worked along side his brother Craig for over 30 years after making the decision to retire in 2009.

Hayes was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing frequently, especially with his family members. He was a former member of Raritan Valley Country Club and the USGA. Hayes had a profound love for baseball and softball, which he played for many years of his life. In June of 2019, he fulfilled his ultimate lifelong dream by visiting Wrigley Field for the first time with his son, Hayes III, to watch his favorite team, the Chicago Cubs, play at home – and win. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, and was a member of the NRA.

He also had a deep love for the Christmas season. Most of all, Hayes loved going to Chebeague Island, Maine where he enjoyed golfing and spending time with family. Hayes will be deeply missed by his family and his many dear friends.

Surviving are his loving wife of 27 years, Ruth MacArthur, sons Hayes III and wife Lauren MacArthur, Cory MacArthur, daughters Kelly and Kirsten MacArthur, sister Karen and husband Lou Spanner, brother Craig and wife Judy MacArthur, sister-in-law Alberta and husband Anthony Terzino, grandchildren Ella, Sophia, Hayes IV, and Danica MacArthur, nieces and nephews Ami (Spanner) Payne, Mark Spanner, David MacArthur, Shannon (MacArthur) Allocco, Lisa (Terzino) Dyer, and Lauren (Terzino) Coddington, great nieces Ashlyn and Amanda Payne and Autumn Spanner, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Private services were held at the Bruce VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 N. Gaston Ave., Somerville. Cremation was private. Interment of ashes will be held at Chebeague Island Cemetery in Maine. To send condolences to the family, please visit brucecvanarsdalefuneralhome.com.
