CUMBERLAND- Alice Cleaves Blackwell,
93, of Chebeague Island died
Tuesday in Portland.
She was born on Chebeague Island,
a daughter of George L. Cleaves and Annie
M. Strout, and attended Portland High
School. She graduated from Portland High
School in 1924 and attended the former
Gray's Business School.
She was employed by the Portland
Press Herald and Bryant Press, both of
Portland.
She was a member of the Chebeague
Island Ladies Aid and the Chebeague Island
Historical Society.
Mrs. Blackwell was proud of always
having a smile. Her interests included
reading, gardening, handcrafts and animals,
especially her cats. She also enjoyed
her family of friends on Chebeague Island.
Her husband, Wendell Blackwell, died in 1976.
Surviving are two daughters, Jane
Frizzell of Chebeague Island and Judith F.
Lewis of Quebec; one son, William C.
Tebbetts of Portland; four grandchildren;
and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Chebeague Island in the summer.
