Phyllis MacArthur

BRANCHBURG -- Phyllis MacArthur, 82, died peacefully Saturday (May 5, 2007) at her residence in Branchburg. Phyllis was born in Chicago, Ill., raised in Scotch Plains and resided in Bridgewater before moving to Branchburg in 1972.

She was a graduate of Scotch Plains High School in 1942. Phyllis was very proud to have served her country as a WAC; a veteran of the Women's Army Corps during World War II where she met her late husband, S. Hayes Sr., "Mac" at an Army hospital in Augusta, Ga. "Mac" had been severely injured in the Battle of the Bulge.

She was a homemaker and attended Pluckemin Presbyterian Church. Phyllis enjoyed volunteering her time at Somerset Medical Center and the Pluckemin Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. MacArthur's greatest passion was time spent at her home on Great Chebeaugue Island in Maine. She loved hosting her entire family and was very proud of the five generation tradition. Phyllis enjoyed beautiful flowers, gardening, reading and birds. She was know to her family as "Nammie," who was a devoted mother, grandmother and sister, and will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, S. Hayes "Mac" MacArthur Sr., who died in 1987.

Surviving are her children, Karen Spanner and husband, Lou, of Pittstown, S. Hayes Jr. and his wife, Ruth, of Branchburg and Craig and his wife, Judy, of Tewksbury; three brothers, Keith, Kent and Kirk Kauffman; two sisters, Joan Crosby and Gayle Helbig; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 5 p.m. Friday at Pluckemin Presbyterian Church, 311 Route 202-206, Pluckemin. Private interment of cremains will be in Chebeaugue Cemetery, Maine. Arrangements are by Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 N. Gaston Ave., Somerville (908) 725-3111. There will be no visiting hours at the funeral home.
