Malcolm S. Rice of Saugus, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2025, at the age of 88.
Born on April 6, 1937, in Saugus, Malcolm was the fifth of six children of Dorothy Bartlett and Albion Ramsdell Rice. He graduated from Saugus High School in 1955 and went on to earn a degree in engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1961. On August 28, 1960, he married the love of his life, Sandra Hill, beginning a devoted partnership that would span 65 years. Together, they raised their three children in the very home where Malcolm himself grew up at 347 Lincoln Avenue in Saugus.
Malcolm spent his professional career with Stone & Webster Engineering in Boston. During the final two years of his working life, he and Sandra lived in Jakarta, Indonesia—an adventure they shared before retiring to Chebeague Island, Maine. For more than 20 years, they also owned a home in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, where they enjoyed many wonderful times
with family and friends.
A past president of the Great Chebeague Golf Club, Malcolm was an avid golfer who felt fortunate to play the game he loved in Maine, Tortola, and The Villages in Florida. He was also a dedicated member of the Chebeague Island Fire & Rescue and for over 30 years, “Old Spice” loved to clown around on the 4th of July. Malcolm deeply loved Chebeague Island—its people and what he affectionately called “the way life should be.” Finest kind.
Known as a kind, intelligent, and humble man with a sharp sense of humor, Malcolm especially delighted in singing with Med and Marlene Bowen, whether at the Bounty Lounge or gathered in their living room on Capps Road.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra (Hill) Rice; his three children, Rochelle Rice & David Lauterbach, Jeffrey Rice & Ellen Rice, and Douglas Rice & Linda Urban; six grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the HCF Ocala ICU team and Cornerstone Hospice in The Villages for their compassionate care in Malcolm’s final days. A very special thanks to the staff of The Island Commons for their kindness and support.
A celebration of Malcolm’s life will be held on Chebeague Island in the summer of 2026.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Chebeague Island Fire & Rescue, 192 North Road, Chebeague Island, ME 04017.
