June C. Scamman, 86, of John Small Road, died Tuesday, October 1st, 2002 at the Island Commons on Chebeague.
She was born June Vinette Richards, July 16, 1916 in Boston, Massachusetts. Adopted in 1927 by Dwight and Maybelle Clement of Wellesley, Massachusetts. She graduated from Wellesley schools and went on to the University of Maine at Orono, graduating in the class of 1938, with a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition.
She married David L. Bowman in 1940.
She became chief dietician and worked for many years in the Laconia, New Hampshire school system. She was the chief dietician at Gaylord Sanitarium in Wallingford, Connecticut, and Tufts Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts.
After she moved to Maine with her family, she worked at the Osteopathic Hospital now Brighton Medical Center where she was nominated as Dietician of the Year. In the years prior to her official retirement, she worked as a traveling dietician with a York County health agency.
She married Lucien Scamman, DVM, in 1970. During their life together in Hollis, Lucien and June both volunteered with the Cleo Fund. After Lucien's death in 1985, June moved to her home on Chebeague Island.
On Chebeague she was instrumental in starting up the Senior Lunch Program held monthly at the parish house. She was involved in the Meals on Wheels program and a member of the Garden Club.
She was well known for her flower and vegetable gardens. Every year, local artists would come and set up their easels in an attempt to capture the beauty of her gardens along the shore of Casco Bay. She was a wonderful cook and provided many baked goods for island organizations.
Three sons survive her. Clement Lee Bowman, of Chebeague Island, Peter Standish Bowman, of Bedford, New Hampshire and Bruce Richardson Bowman, of Chebeague Island and six grandchildren.
A private service for family members will be held at a later
