SOUTH PORTLAND - Theresa (Jane)
Sawyer, 81, of Chapel Street, died March 10, 2006 at her residence.
She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., a daughter of Walter O. and Theresa K. Kane Powell. Mrs. Sawyer lived in Philadelphia for 21 years.
She met and married Lewis B. Sawyer of Portland while he was in the Army. They were married at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Philadelphia in December of 1945 after Mr. Sawyer's discharge from the service. They moved to Portland and spent 48 happy years of marriage before Mr. Sawyer's death on Aug. 30, 1993.
Mrs. Sawyer worked in South Portland as head housekeeper at Quality Inn for 13 years before retiring at the age of 62.
She is survived by a daughter, Theresa S. Cobb of Bradenton, Fla.; a son, Walter B. Sawyer of South Portland; two granddaughters, Susan Szewzyck of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Stephanie Rushton of Athol, Idah; a brother, William Powell of Pennsylvania; also survived by two great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held from 5-8 p.m., on Sunday at Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford, Portland, where a funeral will be held at 1 p.m., on Monday. Burial will follow at Forest City Cemetery in South Portland.
