William Allan Calthorpe

photoWilliam Allan Calthorpe, age 77, of Palmetto, FL died February 11, 2011 of complications of pneumonia. Bill was born in Belmont, MA on January 3, 1934 and graduated from Belmont High School in 1950. He attended Wentworth Institute in Boston, MA. He joined the Marines and served in the Korean conflict. Upon his discharge from the Marines, Bill worked nights at McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA and attended Boston University days under the GI Bill.

He was a member and past President of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and graduated in 1960 and received his BA in Marketing. On June 6, 1959 Bill married Mona McLellan Calthorpe, also of Belmont, MA. Bill worked for H.P. Hood, Charlestown, MA as a manager of the New England area. He worked as a National Sales Manager for Sunshine Biscuits in Framingham, MA and also worked for Weeks/Crowley Foods retiring as a Vice President of Marketing. With each job change came many moves that included living in Riverside, RI, Andover, MA and Londonderry, NH. Bill and his wife, Mona, retried to their family summer home on Chebeague Island, ME for 5 years before deciding to leave the snow and ice behind them and moved to Palmetto, FL in 2005.

He loved his life in Florida and even took up shuffle boarding. While Bill and Mona lived on Chebeague Island, ME, Bill enjoyed boating and exploring the many Islands of Casco Bay. He loved to take photos of the Maine coast and would recreate his photos in oil paintings and he became quite an accomplished painter in his retirement years.

Bill is predeceased by his parents, William and Grace Calthorpe of Belmont, MA and his sister, Dorothy Calthorpe O'Hara Ward of Billerica, MA. Surviving Bill is his loving wife of 51 years, Mona McLellan Calthorpe of Palmetto, FL; children, William J. Calthorpe of Chebeague Island, ME and his two children Jenna and David Calthorpe; Leanne Calthorpe Stefanilo and her three children, James Stefanilo, Arianna Stefanilo and Julia Stefanilo of Chebeague Island, ME; Robert A. Calthorpe of Manchester, NH and his son, Michael Calthorpe of Lawrence, MA. Bill leaves five nephews, great nephews, and a great niece.

A memorial service will be held at the Chebeague Island Church on June 4th at 1:00. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Stephen Ross Memorial fund or the Kids Place, Chebeague Island.
