Ruth White

Teacher,
First - Second Grade

Ruth White was born in Boston and lived in Massachusetts and Ohio until she went to college in New York State.  Her heart, however, was always in Maine. Her mother was from Thomaston and Ruth spent many of her summers in Thomaston and in Cushing.  Being near the coast has always been very important to her.

She began her teaching career in Chicago, first at an inner city public school and then at a private school.  She and her husband moved to Maine in 1974 and Ruth taught half time at the Hebrew Day School in Portland until her first child was born. When her second child was born, she stopped teaching until her third child was in kindergarten.   She taught for one year at Waynflete School in Portland and then for the next twenty years at the Wilson School in Cumberland.

In the spring of 2006 Ruth learned that there was an opening at the Chebeague Island School.  She had always loved being on the island when the first grade classes from Wilson School visited.  She decided to try teaching on the island for a year, knowing that she would be able to go back to Wilson School if she wanted to.  At the end of the year she knew that she wanted to continue teaching on Chebeague.  She was delighted when the new town of Chebeague hired her as the k-2 teacher.

At the end of the 2009 - 2010 academic year, Ruth retired from teaching full-time, however she has not left completely. She loves teaching on the island and currently teaches one day a week in the First - Second Grade room, sharing the position with Tammy Hoidal.
